Jim Berkowicz
is a First Degree Black Belt teaching in Franklin, Tennessee with his classmate and good friend Marc Torrence.
Jim had achieved the rank of Sam Dan, or Third Degree Black Belt, in Tae Kwon Do, but after the events of 9/11/01, he felt that his rank and experience gave him little more than the ability to participate in sporting events, and personally didn’t feel that his training gave him much more of an edge than any other average fighter.
He wanted to find a martial art that developed in-close techniques and a quick devastating response to an attacker.
A fellow Tae Kwon Do student, Master Mike McGrath, invited Jim and several others to watch a San Soo Work out, and after his first exposure to San Soo, Jim never looked back. He adopted the art of Kung Fu San Soo as his passion and studied under the tutelage of Master Bobby Staton.

Jim will be the first to admit that this art is not for everyone, but if you have the intestinal fortitude and mental determination, this art will change you in ways that “you can’t even imagine.”
Jim is still amazed at the transition a student can make – even by the rank of Yellow Belt – as compared to many other disciplines.
“Give us a year,” Jim challenges, “and you will walk with confidence like you never imagined possible.” Although Jim has Bachelors Degrees in Accounting & Business Administration, he also has a Masters in Information Systems; he is most proud of his achievements in the arena of San Soo.
He views his classmates and teachers as his closest and most trusted friends and he is proud to be a part of San Soo in Tennessee.
Jim and his wife live in Franklin, Tennessee, where he is a telecommunications solutions engineer with a major wireless company. |
He teaches in Franklin, Tennessee and also offers Rape Prevention classes on a quarterly basis at his church, Grace Cumberland Presbyterian, in Franklin.
